Contraindications

 

In Medicine, Contraindications is a condition or factor that serves as a reason to withhold a certain medical treatment due to the harm it WOULD cause the person.  
 Below is a table to show certain medicines/conditions, the “Reason Contraindicated” and the ”Necessary Conditions Prior to HBOT”.

2. Cisplatin Impaired wound healing No treatment
3. Disulfiram Blocks superoxide dismutase Discontinue medication
4. Doxorubicin Cardiotoxity Discontinue medication
5. Sulfamylon Impaired wound healing Discontinue & remove medication
6. Asthma Air trapped upon ascent leading to pneumothorax Must be well controlled with medication
7. Claustrophobia Anxiety Treatment with benzodiazepines
8. Congenital spherocytosis Severe hemolysis None, HBOT for emergencies only
9. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease Loss of hypoxic drive to breathe Observation in chamber
10. Eustachian tube dysfunction Barotrauma to tympanic membrane Training, PE tubes
11. High Fever High risk of seizures Provide antipyretic
12. Pacemaker or epidural pain pump Malfunction or deformation of device under pressure Ensure company has pressure tested device and what depth
13. Pregnancy Unknown effect on fetus None, but HBOT may be used in emergencies
14. Seizures May have lower seizure threshold Should be stable on medications, may be treated with Benzodiazepines
15. Upper respiratory infection (URI) Barotrauma Resolution of symptoms or decongestants
